Oh Canada, Catching Obama on NAFTA DoubleSpeak?

February 28th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Hope, change, or is it false hope?  This is must see TV, straight from CTV, a major Canadian network, who checks their sources and it’s damning.  They catch Obama in a bold faced lie on NAFTA.

From CTV:

Within the last month, a top staff member for Obama’s campaign telephoned Michael Wilson, Canada’s ambassador to the United States, and warned him that Obama would speak out against NAFTA, according to Canadian sources.

The staff member reassured Wilson that the criticisms would only be campaign rhetoric, and should not be taken at face value

There are two must see video reports. The first is the original story, the second is the Clinton campaign not only denying they did anything similar but encouraging CTV to investigate and out anyone even remotely affiliated with them who could be found to make such promises to not renegotiate NAFTA.

So far, it sure appears that CTV is dead on, which leads to another question, why is it that Canadian broadcast television can break this so important story while US TV goes on and on about identity politics. Maybe when they renegotiate NAFTA we can import some real journalism to boot.

Additional MSN video of outrage over Obama not speaking up to save Maytag jobs:

Update:  Canadian Embassy denies such a conversation took place, but read the fine print here, for they are validating that among staff, multiple conversations took place, both campaigns.  Canadian Embassy:

We’ve impressed upon them the fact that NAFTA has been good for all three countries,” Norton said. “They have made it clear that NAFTA is an issue of contention in the [U.S.], and that inevitably there would be discussion and debate surrounding NAFTA.”

“They’ve heard us out on the issue of NAFTA and expressed understanding for our position. But the candidates and their campaigns have been very careful to refrain from making specific commitments,” Norton continued, reiterating that no such conversation like the one described in the Canadian TV report ever happened

I for one have a hard time believing a major news organization is going to make up such a bombshell story out of thin air.  We shall see.

Update: CTV names Obama’s adviser who talked to the Canadian ambassador:

The Obama camp did not respond to repeated questions from CTV on reports that a conversation on this matter was held between Obama’s senior economic adviser — Austan Goolsbee — and the Canadian Consulate General in Chicago

latest on the denial of a denial:

On NAFTA, Goolsbee suggested that Obama is less about fundamentally changing the agreement and more in favour of strengthening/clarifying language on labour mobility and environment and trying to establish these as more `core’ principles of the agreement
