Sen. Chuck Schumer Hurts the Baileys

February 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

I find this to be really outrageous. Senator Schumer is out peddling his book, Positively American: Winning Back the Middle-Class Majority One Family at a Time. In it, he describes a mythical middle class family, the Baileys.

Guess what, while Senator Schumer talks about helping this great American middle class family, he is busy behind the scenes, commissioning and endorsing policy recommendations written by a corporate special interest lobbyist firm. These policy recommendations are geared to economically wipe out the Baileys!

Senator Chuck Schumer hired a notorious, private global consulting firm to write a report peddling offshore outsourcing and insourcing and then presented the results as “objective”.

It’s the same principle as having the oil companies write our energy policy.
Senator Schumer, along with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, commissioned this report (PDF), written by the notorious and infamous McKinsey Institute that basically recommends offshore outsourcing and displacing you with cheaper labor via guest worker Visas (H-1B) as a “solution” to “economic competitiveness”.

This isn’t the solution, it’s the problem!

H-1B Visas are well documented as a labor arbitrage vehicle. Here are statistics, studies and materials which prove the H-1B Visa is being used to lower wages, offshore outsource jobs and displace Americans. The amount of evidence is so voluminous at this point, I just list the page so your browser doesn’t load with thousands of pages of objective studies.

The McKinsey Institute has been peddling offshore outsourcing and insourcing through the H-1B Visa. This is one of the main damages to the American middle class. They offshore outsource American jobs and if they cannot offshore the jobs, they bring in cheap labor into the United States to replace Americans, discriminate against Americans and most importantly lower wages.

Why does McKinsey Global Institute promote this? Why money of course!

One of McKinsey’s largest clients is NASSCOM, the Indian IT Industry association. McKinsey’s joint reports with NASSCOM have advocated an expansion of the H-1B program. NASSCOM’s members exploit loopholes in the H-1B program for competitive advantage. Embracing labor arbitrage and offshore outsourcing of US jobs is exactly opposite what the United States needs to be doing on trade, labor issues to strengthen, not weaken the United States middle class.

NASSCOM firm members bring in lower cost foreign workers to the US under the H-1B program resulting in job loss and wage suppression for US workers. It is known as body shopping.

McKinsey Institute makes their living by promoting offshore outsourcing and insourcing. How can anyone, claiming to be for the middle class, commission such a piece of biased fiction by a special interest group and endorse it?

So, what about the Baileys Senator Schumer is talking about? Well, as the book says, it’s about getting the middle class vote, versus actually enacting policy that strengthens the US middle class huh.

Maybe Senator Schumer’s mythical Bailey family is this:

Oh yeah, guess who missed the minimum wage bill vote?

UPDATE: Guess who paid for the report? The Baileys!
The New York City Economic Development Corporation paid McKinsey to do the work.
